The sun comes up again, and with it comes a whole new day of beat bashery and hopefully our weight in cold beverages. As today is the biggest festival of the conference, we have opted to start the day in a chillax fashion. Some of us opt to run around taking photos, some of us lie in the sand, and a select few of us head down the way to chill poolside with some friends and take in some sun. As the morning turns to the afternoon, we find ourselves navigating our way out of South Beach and its majestic deco world and into the lavish Bayfront area known as the downtown region. Once we finally make through some horrendous traffic situations we are greeted to what can only be regarded as the biggest event of its kind on this continent. The annual Ultra Music Festival, the ultimate electronic music showcase, usually attracts anywhere from 50 to 70,000 plus revellers. This year's attendance seemed like it was at its best and although we have yet to get solid numbers i would assume above 65,000 people were in attendance. Although many found will call to be an absolute waste of time, the media entrance is thankfully a much easier way to enter. No wait, no fuss, just enter... unlike the two plus hour wait that many were forced to endure (partially due to the venue relocation because of the hurricane damage to the area). There were so many fantastic artists playing that day that it was impossible to name them all. We here in the Nocturnal camp highlight the following artists as the ones we felt shone the brightest on this day. Carl Cox ripped it up in his self branded tent, and as expected it was off the hook and intense the entire way. Donald Glaude seemed to take the crowd to new heights in the house tent, with his signature combination of energy and slammin' tracks and his trips to the front of the stage to rev up an already mental crowd. On the live tip, The Killers turned in a decent performance to a packed arena, and Infusion closed out the festival in fine form with their trademark blend of enthusiasm and showing great composure when a laptop crash threatened to shut them down (thank god for their iPod ;) ), but their followings paled in comparison to the legions of fans that amassed in front of the main stage for The Prodigy. There music was gripping and heavy and you would swear the heavens themselves were crashing down when 'Firestarter' ploughed through the intensely loud system. The DJ set of the day though, in our humble opinion, was given to the dirty-Dutch beat junkie Sander Kleinenberg. Showcasing a ton of new tracks that would ultimately encapsulate much of the Miami vibe, including the super anthem “This Is Miami”, Sander crushed his way through a perfectly programmed set. The crowd before him could do nothing but lose it time after time, as he displayed in fine fashion what makes him such a formidable presence. If you ever venture to the conference, it is without a doubt worth experiencing this monstrous event, as there literally is something for every electronic fan. To truly understand it, peruse the festival's website and get ready as they unleash several new festivals throughout 2006 including the 2nd instalment of Ultra NYC!
::: Charles Webster Interview
It’s great when your star is in the ascendant, especially in that headiest of all heady worlds, the music business. That unbeatable adrenalin rush as your career seems to be on a permanent upward trajectory. Everyone loves you, everyone wants to be your friend. They slap you on the back (ouch, that hurt actually…), they want to be seen with you (hang on, your trousers reflect badly on me…), take drugs with you (just say no)... ::: Read the Interview
