If someone hasn’t already told you to visit Opium Gardens on your South Beach travels; then consider this a friendly reminder that you should. It’s a simply stunning venue that boasts a dance floor with no roof, coliseum seating that leads to several smaller rooms around the venue; and a plethora of bars to ensure that you’re always relieving your thirst. Tonight, we were ready for the sick tribal stylings of the Star*69 camp, and as we entered the venue nice and early were greeted by the enigmatic Saeed Younan. Unfortunately, what promised to be an exercise on bass lines and congas, turned quickly into an excursion in futility. Because of previous noise violations at the conference early in the week; they were forced to have their bass bins virtually off. Tribal with no bass? Although we love these guys, an early exit was warranted. It was a real shame as Saeed, Cevin Fisher, and Angel Moraes know how to turn a mutha out… but nothing could overcome very disappointing sound quality of the venue, and from past experiences we know that the system in there is phenomenal when fully running. We’ll tune in again next year.
