- Hector Romero @ Club Love NYC

It is a truth generally acknowledged that Club Love has the best soundsystem in New York City. Club Love, nestled on a quiet street in Greenwich Village, is one of a kind. Having been open for about a year and a half, it has generally kept a low profile and kept itself out of the public’s limelight, but this will surely change in the near future. Once known as West 8 th, it has transformed and reinvented itself into Love, a haven for music lovers and audiophiles. However, if I must compare it to other venues, I’d say it is a larger incarnation of Filter-14, or a smaller version of the once mighty Twilo, both of which are now defunct. Now don’t get me wrong here, and I’m not using Twilo’s name in vain, but it’s somewhat of a mini-Twilo to me, in the sense that the sound is overpowering, yet, at the same time somewhat manageable. The people who come are there for the music. Also, the attention to these details is what makes clubs like these in a league of their own, and my personal favorites.
Their mission statement is as follows :
LOVE has been built to provide a place where artists are encouraged to push the boundaries of their craft and to promote shared values of respect, acceptance, and peacefulness through the stories they tell. It is dedicated to the idea that the differences among us should be celebrated, but that our shared humanity, in the end, unites us as one. Our goal is to make the world a little more interesting and a little gentler.
And to throw great parties...
Can I get a ‘HELL YEAH’?!!
But it is one thing to have it as one’s mission; it’s another to actually go through with it, because we all know action speaks louder than words.
On this specific night, I had the distinct pleasure to hear Hector Romero (Def Mix Productions, SAW Recordings) play music on this fine sound system. As the promoters of the night stated, “ When we first received word that we would be starting our Unified Friday's at LOVE, one of the first dj's we thought of bringing in as a guest was Hector Romero”, which made me reference the infamous Filter-14 night club (which sucked by the way, wink wink).
I’d like to focus on the sound for a hot minute (not that I haven’t already), however, I can’t stress enough nor even exaggerate the aural bliss that bleeds through the custom-made Gary Stewart Audio system (www.gsany.com). A few pictures of the super badass system can be found here: www.gsany.com/projects6.html. Hearing is believing, and as much I say it’s one of the best, you’ll have to hear it yourself. The booth itself pretty much resembles a cockpit of a space shuttle…ready to lift you off to outer space. The light system is unreal, and my man running it emits a passion and knowledge for the music he’s accompanying.
The bartenders are great and keep the party going. There are places to sit in the back room if your dancing shoes need a break. You’ll also be surprised to stumble into another room situated behind a cascade of water falling into a rock basin. The locals have already affectionately dubbed it as the “Fraggle Rock” room, and again, seeing is believing (and I’ll leave it at that).
You just can’t hate Love. There’s absolutely no bullshit and that’s true love baby. And that’s the bottom line.
