- Who is this Robsoul Guy Anyway?
- 04.25.2006 ::: Jessica Lowry
In 2000, Phil Weeks founded Robsoul Recordings and each track released on the independent French label presents the deeper and more hypnotic edge of house music. Artists currently working with the label include DJ Sneak, Fred Everything, Hector Moralez, and several others.
On March 4th, the label’s founder Phil Weeks, graced our fair city at Footwork. True to the labels character Phil played an incredible set filed with deep beats, bordering at times on tech house, but remaining firmly planted in the classic Chicago style. Alongside Jason Hodges, a personal favorite for quality tracks such as, ‘No Farting in the Ice House’ and a few of the rotating residents, Hali and Mike Gleeson, the night wasn’t one to miss.
The combination of Robsoul and Footwork is pretty interesting. Robsoul is similar in nature to Footwork as both break from the mainstream. There’s something about a club found down an alley that really appeals to me. I don’t know why, maybe it’s the vibe that normally it’s not the best idea to wander into dimly lit back alleys, but more it’s the fact that the effort required in locating something original and authentic feels incredibly satisfying. Toronto has a long varied history with regards to house and the fusion of Toronto talent and international headliners is exactly what our city needs.
If you did miss out on previous Robsoul events not to worry, there are ongoing monthly residencies at Footwork showcasing the best the label has to offer. All upcoming events can be found on Nocturnal’s event calendar.
The next Robsoul night will be Footwork’s 1 Year Anniversary on May 6 th and features David Duriez.
As a producer, Duriez has developed his own sound described “as house music in its purest form”. He is on a long list of labels including: 2020Vision, Gourmet, Jinxx, Stickman, Afterhours, Low Pressings, F Com and Simple Soul. Additionally, he’s remixed tracks for well-known artists and bands such as Dax Riders, Jori Hulkkonen, Fred Everything, Rollercone, Tony Senghore and Random Factor.
There is no question that Duriez is not to be missed.
