- Sundance 2006 @ Beach Club - Montreal, Canada
- 07.22-23.2006 ::: Andrew Reid
6000 revellers gathered at Montreal's famous Beach Club for a spectacular festival the likes of which only of global power like Godskitchen could provide. With an all star lineup that boasted the likes of Steve Lawler, Bad Boy Bill, Misstress Barbara, Christopher Lawrence, Toronto's Simon Jain, Nathan Barato, Sean Miller, Manzone & Strong, and the legendary Danny Tenaglia among countless others, the two day festival was nothing short of musical bliss.
Our little convoy (orchestrated by the one and only Ally M from Till The AM) set the wheels in motion early Saturday morning and made the 5 hour trek to la belle province. Not knowing what to expect as the rain fell, we made our way to Beach Club and were pleasantly surprised by several thousand partiers ready to get their groove on, rain or shine!
Sticking primarily to the large tent to keep things reasonably dry, we (along with the full crowd) we thoroughly rocked by none other than Bad Boy Bill. Playing his trademark blend of aggressive house beats, he gave the crowd exactly what they were craving and paved the way for Montreal techno goddess Misstress Barbara. Interacting to the crowd from start to finish, Barbara fuelled the energy with a jacking tech-electro set. Not to be outdone, Victor Calderone took control to close things out, and despite the volume being reduced to cooperate with the neighbours he laid down a classic Calderone blend of circuit anthems and tribal beats.
Of course when in Montreal you can’t miss out on bagels and smoked meat, so a late night trip downtown for the aforementioned, some bieres and poutine our bellies were satiated and we were fully energized for round 2 the next day.
Arriving still in morning, we were primed for our very own Simon Jain and Nathan Barato to take their stabs at this monster setup, and neither disappointed. With a full TO contingent to support, the boys each layed down an hour of serious treats and beats with smooth mixing style. A testament to why they are 2 of Toronto’s best. After being spun around the sandy floor by their hot beats, it was off to the amazing outdoor stage, fortunately graced by the blazing sun.
With a slew of shirtless boys and bikini clad girls shaking their thangs, this stage proved to be the place to be for the rest of our stint at Sundance. Starting us off was Sonic resident and Toronto boy Sean Miller. Sean showed why he is opening for Lawler around the continent as he laid down a sick tribal infused piece of deck wizardry. With a brief and jacking interlude by Ruff & Tort, Sean took control yet again and teed it up for UK star Mr. Steve Lawler. Lawler’s set was what you’d expect, dirty, deep, dark, and twisted 4/4 to the floor. The packed area was entranced by his decks and efx mastery and Lawler continually layered more and more dirt as he progressed to the end of his set. Lastly the legend Danny Tenaglia stepped up. In true Danny form, you never know what you’re going to get… and this time DT was in the mood for techno. Perhaps the crowd was itching for tribal or house, but many just weren’t in the headspace for what Danny had to offer. Unfortunate, yes, as we all know what the man can do… but that’s Danny.
All in all, Sundance was an amazing 2 day festival and completely worth our trek across the 401. A special nod goes to Stephan, Patrick and all of the organizers and staff for not only producing a quality, unique event but for some of the most courteous and professional handlings of such a large scale event. We absolutely cannot wait for next year!
