::: Nocturnal Magazine.net Weekly Top 50 || Best of 2008

2008 was another amazing year for electronic music. Superstars continued to churn out hits and rising champions burst onto the scene. While some may claim 2008 was all about the remake or rehash, there were plenty of upfront fresh material to wet our appetites. We racked over the hundreds of tracks we heard this year and narrowed it down to our 50 most desirable. Toolroom and Defected dominated with sheer quality, and all the big names are here... Mark Knight, Deadmau5, Axwell, Bob Sinclar, Copyright, The Shapeshifters, David Guetta, Steve Angello, Laidback Luke, Funkagenda, D Ramirez, Chocolate Puma, Groove Armada, Chris Lake, Kaskade, Dennis Ferrer, Hatiras, Fedde le Grand and Dirty South. We also saw tons of emerging talent... Adam K & Soha, Marc Evans, Ralf GUM, Workidz, Carl Kennedy, Studio Apartment, Funkerman, Yass, Quentin Harris, David Lara, Danny Clark & Jay Benham, and Robert Rodrigues. We easily could have made a Top 100 and we're sure there's great records not on our list, but these are guaranteed to make dancefloors crazy, enjoy!

Spoon, Harris & Obernik Baditude Toolroom

BOOM! Anthem alert! Dave Spoon teams up with Paul Harris and the vocal stylings of Sam Obernik for a monster of a tune in Baditude. Toolroom put out a lot of biggies this year, but this one certainly was the biggest and baddest. Played by almost everyone, this track had the crossover commerical success to boot making it the without a doubt top track of 2008. Get ready for some 'tude baby! » AR

2 --
Adam K & Soha Twilight Hotbox Digital
What more can you say about this uber hit than GORGEOUS! Adam K & Soha nailed a fine balance of beautiful synth chords with glorious pads and moving percussion. This one is not constrained by genres and played by all that want to make a statement on their dancefloor. » AR
3 --
Steve Angello & Laidback Luke f. Robin S Show Me Love (Hardwell Remix) Data
The Hardwell bootleg took the Robin S classic and fused it perfectly with Angello & Luke's "Be". This dominated so many tastemakers' record bags that it had to be signed and done for real. While it doesn't have all the elements from "Be" that made it so amazing, the core is there and the vocal is waaaaaay tighter, so if you couldn't get your hands on it, you now can. » AR
4 --
Studio Apartment f. Yasmeen Sulieman Sun Will Shine Defected
Although late in the year, the best vocal of the year may very well be Sun Will Shine. Yasmeen Sulieman has burst onto the scene and this track is an absolute gem! Amazing vocals, addictive hook, and that feel good vibe will ruin dancefloors! » AR
5 --
Mark Knight & Funkagenda Man With The Red Face Toolroom
Can we get a shout out for Laurent Garnier?!? Melodic, hypnotic and mesmorizing... Mark and Adam remake this classic into a modern anthem. If you missed this one, return your turntables, you shouldn't be a DJ. » AR
6 --
Marc Evans Reach Out For Love (Muthafunkaz 12" Mix) Defected
The follow up to the amazing Given Me Joy is even better!!! With a little sample from the classic DJ Sneak track "Show Me the Way", The Muthafunkaz drop the hammer and make this one of the best tunes of the year! » AR
7 --
Chocolate Puma Morning Rain Defected
The follow up to the awesome "Touch Me" could be even hyper! "Morning Rain" takes a very orchestral instrumental and matches it with big kicks and a killer vocal hook. Only large rooms can handle the size of this track. » AR
8 --
D Ramirez f. TC With Me or Against Me Toolroom

No question in my mind, that this track was supreme in 2008. From techno heads, to electro twitchers to big room Tiesto wanna-be’s, Ramirez’s chugging bass-monster certainly brought the house down from continent to continent. The master of the studio reigns again.

9 --
Daft Punk Around The World (Funkagenda WMC 2008 Mix) PROMO

Definitely one of my favourite producers of 2008, Adam Walder a.k.a Funkagenda , melted Miami into the ocean with this WMC release! Just about every major music pusher on the planet had this one in their bags, laptops and CD books! Not a dance-floor in the world can resist the way this classic rework wallops!

10 --
Groove Armada f. Candi Stanton Love Sweet Sound Strictly Rhythm
Groove Armada continue to show that they simply make hits. Love Sweet Sound combines infectious vocals with addictive key stabs and floating pads. Nice build throughout make it a dancefloor heavyweight. Add remixes from Mark Knight & Funkagenda and Nic Fanciulli and how can you go wrong. » AR
11 --
Ralf GUM f. Monique Bingham Kissing Strangers GOGO Music
It was early in the year, but this little gem from Ralf GUM and the brilliant Monique Bingham still rocks dancefloors. Whether it's the groovy tone of Ralf's original or the deep and brooding version from Frankie Feliciano, this track is amazing. » AR
12 --
The Shapeshifters Lola's Theme (2008 Re-edit) Nocturnal Groove
This is one of my favourite tracks of all-time, and needless to say I was salivating at the thought that an update was on its way. With a tougher, more "now" instrumental and an amazing breakdown showcasing the classic, this is once again a dancefloor destroyer. » AR
13 --
Leger & Lake Word Rising Music
When two guys of this calibre team up, there is no question the results will be outstanding. Enter into the mix WORD, a tech-house pounder, that snakes its way around the room only to re-emerge as a modern electro-funk-disco biscuit!!!! SWEET TRACK!!! » SJ
14 --
Axwell & Bob Sinclar f. Ron Carroll What A Wonderful World Defected
Let's see... 3 legends of house come together to make a track... this was destined to be amazing from the get go. Yes it has some commercial feel, but Axy knows how to keep it real. This destroyed WMC, and kept on burning through Ibiza... What a Wonderful track. » AR
15 --
Deadmau5 f. Kaskade I Remember Mau5trap
Epic anthem... Deadmau5 teams with Kaskade for an absolutely gorgeous song. Trademark dreamy vocals from Kaskade and those monster chords from Deadmau5 make this a must for your collection. » AR
16 --
The Shapeshifters Chime Defected
In a year that saw many tunes of old resurface, one of the best was a little jaunt from The Shapeshifters sampling the Oribital classic. With a killer remix from Martijn ten Velden, this track melted many a bassbin. Long live acid house. » AR
17 --
Azzido da Bass Doom's Night (Laidback Luke Remix) Kontor
Even though we all know that Timo’s mix of this classic track set the world on fire, and in someway defined a sound that was to churn out of speakers for some time to come, Luke reminds us quite BOOOMBASTICALLY...what a hot track that was...and is now turned once more. » SJ
18 --
Copyright f. Imaani Wizeman Defected

More deep and brooding sickness from Copyright. This time the lush vocals of Imaani drip like honey over the rich and grooving instrumental. Check out the Peaktime mixes for a little more aggressive workout... top notch deep house for sure. » AR

19 --
David Guetta f. Tara McDonald Delirious (Laidback Luke Remix) Ultra
It would be almost odd if Guetta didn't make at least one appearance in a best of year end review. For 08, Delerious was definitely the standout helped along by rising superstar Laidback Luke. The 80's vibe to the keys compliment Tara's amazing vocals for a hands-in-the-air epic. » AR
20 --
Laidback Luke & Tom Stephan f. Romanthony Show Stealth

This one lit WMC ablaze, and now it's finally here for the punters to savor! Laidback Luke and Tom Stephan dip into the vault for one of house music's classic anthems and rework it for the 2008 dancefloor in fine form. An absolute anthem this one will be EVERYWHERE! Let me show you love! » AR

21 --
Hatiras & Flipside Tribute Hatrax

The king of Canadian electro-ass kicking, Hatiras, pumps a nice synth-churning ditty sure to turn your noggin up in tribute to the old school jams, throw in the oh-so-modern, yet Chicago style vocals of one MC Flipside, and what you have is an infectious groove. » SJ

22 --
King Unique Hinode (Fergie Remix) Curfew

Wow. Not that KU needed any help making a track huge, but where the f**k did Fergie come from with this sound! For those of you that wanna piss on the brutal hard-house crap that used to churn out of this man, put aside the hate and get on board the tech-house Fergie train... like a DJ makeover. » SJ

23 --
Workidz Twisted Toolroom Trax

You may not be that familiar with his name, but you would certainly be familiar with his tracks. Over the years Workidz has squeezed out more then a few underground gems, and 2008 was no exception. His EP on toolroom was an absolute keeper, and this was a true tweeker! A dirty grinding number that combines some solid electro-trickery with proper tech-house dirt! This one slams everytime!

24 --

What!!!! If you don’t know this track, stop djing... go buy it... smile, restart your career! A welcome addition to any record bag, whatever you play!!!! CLASSIC! » SJ

28 --
Mescal Kid Magic Size

Really, this track needs no intro. It’s the one with the ‘semi-drunk’ smoke detector sound that lethargically flips around, until it becomes more conscise, and then...BANG-O!!!!! A true basement club murderer, the drums on this will bring you back to the days when all parties were lit only by the lights of the mixer and the 1200 platters rotating in front of you! This track kills!

29 --

31 --
Copyright f. Imaani Deeper (Baggi Begovic & Soul Conspiracy Club Mix) Defected
Copyright had another stellar year, and this late entry was no exception to their knack for quality house music. Baggi Begovic & Soul Conspiracy simply elevate the track with a tougher instrumental that compliments Imaani's brilliant vocals and retains the solid vibe of the original. » AR
32 --
Dirty South f. Rudy Let It Go (Axwell Remix) Defected
Dirty South cemented himself as one of the top producers in the world in 2008. This latin-guitar laden anthem was a monster on its own, but throw in a remix from the sublime Axwell and you have a sure fire megaton. » AR
33 --
Dennis Ferrer f. KT Brooks Run Free (Tomo Experience Remix) King Street
Dennis Ferrer had an amazing 2008. His album, My World churned out hit after hit and "Run Free" is no exception. While the original is a superb slice of deepness, the Tomo Experience Remix elevated the track into a more peak time bumper. » AR
34 --

Marc Evans has leapt onto the house scene with a bang. Backed by the legendary DJ Spen and The Muthafunkaz, Marc's sound is all that super bumping feel good house you'd expect from these blokes. 36 --
Eddie Thoneick I Wanna Freak U Tonik

The debut release on Eddie's own Tonik imprint is an absolute monster! Sampling the vocals from Jodeci's hit Eddie gives it his trademark funky electro house style and churns out an absolute anthem. Pick the Classic Mix for that feelgood throwback vibe or Kurd Maverick or DJ Delicious' remixes for a tougher jaunt. » AR

37 --
Yass My Only Defected

Yass is a man on a mission of late. And that mission is to dominate dancefloors with sick deep house. With his latest gem on Defected I'd say it's mission accomplished. With moody, hypnotic vocals, a bassline to drool over and intelligent key and brass stabs this is a must. » AR

38 --
Quentin Harris f. Margaret Grace My Joy Strictly Rhythm

Slick and sexy vocal house from NYC star Quentin Harris. Muthafunkaz kill it in their traditional style but for something unique and super cool check out ATFC's Lectrotek Vocal. » AR

42 --
Josh Gabriel Recife Different Pieces

One of the true North American heroes of trance, Gabriel finds himself solo these days, and the results are deafening. Adopting a progressive tech-house sound, but keeping it all his own, Gabriel released a plethora of tracks in 2008 that all stomped, and this one is one of them. Not a full-blown anthem in any way, rather Gabriel is more subtle with his power now, choosing to drop in chunkier synths with a variety of fresh techno elements. » SJ

43 --
Gus Gus Need In Me (Trick & Kubic Mix) NEWS

The icelandic duo make the list this year with definite help from German techno duo trick & Kubic. Easily one of the sexiest and most memorable vocals of the year. That alone made it destined to be played over and over again, but when you through some uber-simple yet perfect synth stabs on top...Boom. Dance floor gold! » SJ

44 --
David Lara Bounty Solar

David Lara got around a little last year and for good reason. His keen ear for the dance-floor translates just right through his music, this track is a shining example of that ability. It hangs in the balance between tech house and driving electro and at first you would even think its a throw back to old warehouse anthems, but it handily moves into a very perky techno number, only to finish in stomping fashion. » SJ

45 --
Martin Solveig C'est La Vie (Fedde vs Martin Club Mix) Mixture
This hidden gem didn't get the attention it probably deserved, and with 2 names like Martin Solveig and Fedde le Grand attached it's strange. This super-funker is perfect to bump a dancefloor proper, with Martin's French-funk melding perfectly with Fedde's dutch chunkiness. » AR
46 --

Robert!!! Where is your next record? » SJ
